The Diversity Common Reader Program is an initiative focused on embracing diversity by exposing a new cultural or ethnic idea at a campus-wide level. The committee invites the college community to take part in discussions with the author of a chosen book and in writing and art contests reflecting the reading.

Northern Michigan University commissioned us to create two posters for this event that showcased themes from Jessie Close’s book “Resilience: Two Sisters and a Story of Mental Illness.”

An exploration of the multiplicity of emotions and experiences surrounding those with or impacted by mental illness.

This poster design highlights how stigmas about mental illness hinder the healing process. The walnut plays on the term “going nuts” while also symbolizing the brain and it’s role in mental health. This design was also used as a decal for the Student Art Gallery at NMU.
